Wamkele Mene, secretary general of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and his accompanying delegation visited on Tuesday the headquarters of the General Authority For Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCzone) in Ain Sokhna.
The delegation took a tour in the economic zone and its various industrial sectors to identify investment opportunities, as one of the most important national projects in Egypt, and to discuss ways of cooperation and promoting joint trade exchange between the African continent.
Mene expressed his sincere gratitude and happiness to visit Egypt in general and the zone in particular, which is his first visit to a project outside Cairo.
On his part, Mohamed Shaaban, the deputy chairperson of SCZone for the southern sector affirmed the interest of the political leadership and the Egyptian state in developing and supporting the economy at all levels, including taking firm steps towards the availability of facilities, services and incentives in the Suez Canal, qualifying it to be among the most competitive zones in the world.
“Egypt established major national projects that were reflected in economic development indicators and placed Egypt in an advanced position among the emerging countries with a positive growth rate,” Shaaban added.
During the meeting, Tarek Hashem, Assistant Director-General for Investor Relations Department at the SCZone made a detailed presentation about the region, including one on the industrial zones, affiliated ports, as well as the organizational and legislative structure and the advantages and exemptions that the region enjoys in terms of business performance that eases access to global markets through free trade agreements with several countries.
“SCZone makes Egypt a gateway to the African and Middle Eastern market,” Hashem said.
He also presented the importance of cooperation between the economic zone and its counterparts in Africa, especially after joining Africa Economic Zones Organization (AEZO) last February.
