Mr. Waleid Gamal El-Dien, Chairman of the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), participated in the “World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition” held in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, from May 13 to 15, which is the most prominent event in the field of green energy on the European continent. The summit discussed ways to support the energy transition and maximize the role played by governments, along with the private sector and financing institutions, in achieving the goals of the global green energy transition.
On the sidelines of the World Hydrogen Summit activities, Mr. Waleid Gamal El-Dien participated in a high-level roundtable of the International Hydrogen Trade Forum (IHTF), with the participation of Mr. Rob Genn, Minister of Climate and Energy Policy, in the Netherlands; in addition to the broad involvement of several ministers concerned with the green energy, and some major private sector companies working in this field in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East region. SCZONE Chairman participated as well in a round table entitled “Opportunities for cooperation in the field of green hydrogen between the Netherlands and Egypt”, in the presence of: (Mr. Hossam Heiba, Chairman of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones, and Mr. Ayman Soliman, Director of the Egyptian Sovereign Fund, Mr. Gijs Postma, Director of Energy Markets at the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Mr. Erik van der Heijden, Director of Energy Transition at the Port of Rotterdam, and Mr. Bart de Smet, Green Hydrogen Development Officer at the International Investment Corporation).
“SCZONE provides various investment opportunities in the green fuel sector, whether green fuel production projects of all types, for which SCZONE has signed several framework agreements and MoUs with major global consortia, or feeding and complementary industries such as electrolyzes, solar panels and water desalination membranes. SCZONE, along with its partners, opened a green fuel production plant that was inaugurated by the Egyptian President and the Prime Minister of Norway during the activities of the COP27 Climate Summit.” SCZONE Chairman declared during the summit activities
Mr. Waleid Gamal El-Dien also held a meeting with Mr. Felipe Arbelaez, Senior Vice President of the BP Hydrogen Group. They discussed ways of cooperation in green hydrogen projects within SCZONE. The Chairman reviewed the efforts SCZONE made to implement infrastructure projects and facilities with international standards to accommodate the upcoming hydrogen projects.
Moreover, SCZONE Chairman also signed an MoU with the Rotterdam Foundation. Which aims for institutional cooperation in the areas of green economy transformation and raising the efficiency of seaports through the exchange of technical expertise and the implementation of several joint training programs.
During a session entitled “Decarbonizing Shipping Fleets,” Mr. Waleid Gamal El-Dien stated: “There is no alternative to unite international efforts, whether on the part of governments or global economic alliances, as well as financing institutions and all parties concerned with green energy industry fuels.”
